about me.

So, I previously had a blog purely dedicated to my thoughts on the sporting world, consisting of both my opinions and more formal articles based on my own research (see blog here if you care). However, as I embark on my journey in becoming a better writer (thanks to the Writing and Editing course at the Rhodes University Journalism School and now Digital Media), I decided to challenge myself in dedicating a blog to things other than sport (but not excluding it.). And so I have decided to call this blog 'sports & thoughts' because it simply encompasses my mission but does not limit it to one thing in particular.

I should make it known that my primary love in life is sport. After sport comes Labradors but I am unfortunately not going to be writing about them. I have been playing soccer since the ripe age of eight and has been the axis on which my world spun right up until the point of me writing this. But being a female soccer player in our beautiful South Africa has its challenges, although being a female soccer player in general presents challenges separate to my geography. What does someone like me do when these challenges get too much to handle? I write about it. Hence, this blog. I am, however, interested in the gender politics involved in the sporting world as whole, but I will draw on my own experiences to make my posts more authentic.

Secondly, I have anxiety (see this article for further explanation), and this is not an uncommon problem in my generation. Although it is not uncommon, I think the more writing there is about it, the easier it will become to talk about in open spaces. The issue of stigmas attached to these disorders needs  to be addressed, but not in a way that desensitizes them. However, I am more interested in writing about my own experiences which will, in turn, help me cope with my own struggles. Maybe, at the end of all my feelsy posts about stuff that makes me angry or stuff that makes me happy, realisations, or things I am going through currently, I will have attracted some people on the interwebs that are just as feelsy as I am.

Also, I am intensifying my love for the digital world. Now an honours student in Digital Media, my blog will involve more posts about how the digital world is helping or destroying us, particularly when it comes to sport. I'm exploring fairly new terrain, so let's see how this goes.
